چکیده

In April-May, 2001, the previously reported experiment to synthesize element 118 using the Pb(Kr,n)118 reaction was repeated. No events corresponding to the synthesis of element 118 were observed with a total beam dose of 2.6 × 10 ions. The simple upper-limit cross-sections (1 event) were 0.9 and 0.6 pb for evaporation residue magnetic rigidities of 2.00 Tm and 2.12 Tm, respectively. A more detailed cross-section calculation, accounting for an assumed narrow excitation function, the energy loss of the beam in traversing the target and the uncertainty in the magnetic rigidity of the Z = 118 recoils is also presented. Re-analysis of the primary data files from the 1999 experiment showed the reported element 118 events are not in the original data. The current results put constraints on the production cross-section for synthesis of very heavy nuclei in cold-fusion reactions. He) Reactions

Recently, deeply bound pionic states were found experimentally in (d, 3 He) reactions on 208 Pb. They found an isolated peak structure in the bound region below the pion production threshold. We study theoretically these excitation functions in (d, 3 He) reactions on 208 Pb at T d =600 MeV. We found very good agreement with the (d, 3 He) excitation functions and could identify the underlying st...

The Glauber approximation for the treatment of heavy-ion scattering, has already been shown to give reliable predictions for the reaction cross section in the particular case of intermediate energy charge-exchange processes. In the present work, we couple a Glauber-type model to microscopic Random Phase Approximation calculations of the charge-exchange excitations of 208Pb. The aim is to solve ...

Neutrino Detection Using Lead Perchlorate

νx + 208 Pb ⇒ Pb + ν ′ x (NC) ⇓ Pb+ xγ + yn The number of neutrons emitted (0, 1, or 2) depends on the neutrino energy and whether the interaction is via the charged current (CC) or neutral current (NC). The nuclear physics of this system is described in Ref. [4]. A lead-based neutrino detector must have an appreciable density of Pb atoms and the capability of detecting the electrons, gammas an...
